Road Rules
How to prepare for your motorcycle learner licence theory test
If you’re planning to get your New Zealand Class 6 motorcycle learner licence, the theory test is your first major step. Many people think it’s just about memorising road signs, but the test is really about understanding how to ride safely on New Zealand roads.
At 1st Gear Motorcycle Training NZ, we often see learners who have good riding instincts but lose marks because they misunderstand some of the most important road rules. One of the biggest examples is the stop sign rule.
The stop sign rule: stop means stop
This is one rule that catches many learner riders out.
At a STOP sign, you must:
Stop completely
Make sure the wheels are motionless
Have at least one foot on the ground
A slow rolling stop is not a stop. Even if the road looks clear, you must bring the motorcycle to a complete halt before proceeding.
This habit is not only important for the theory test and Basic Handling Skills Test (BHST), but it can also prevent serious crashes at intersections where visibility is limited.
Understand the road code, don’t just memorise it
The learner licence theory test is designed to assess whether you understand the rules and can apply them in real situations.
Focus on:
Give Way rules
Stop and Give Way signs
Speed limits
Following distances
Lane positioning
Hazard awareness
Motorcycle-specific road rules
Ask yourself why a rule exists. Riders who understand the reason behind the rule usually perform much better in the test.
Practice with real road situations
One of the best ways to prepare is to observe traffic as a rider would.
For example, when approaching an intersection, ask:
What can I see?
What can’t I see?
What is reasonably likely to happen?
This is the beginning of defensive riding and the Roadcraft mindset that we teach at 1st Gear.
Common theory test mistakes
Many learners lose marks on questions involving:
Intersections
Right-of-way rules
Railway crossings
Traffic signals
Stopping distances
Alcohol limits
Motorcycle safety equipment
Read each question carefully. The wording can be very specific.
Use practice tests
Complete multiple NZ motorcycle learner licence practice tests before booking your exam.
Aim to consistently score well above the pass mark. If you’re getting questions wrong, go back to the Road Code and understand the rule rather than simply remembering the answer.
Learn the habits that make you a safer rider
The theory test is not just a hurdle to get through. The knowledge you learn now becomes the foundation for everything that follows:
Your Basic Handling Skills Test
Riding on public roads
Your restricted licence
Your full licence assessment
Good habits developed early are much easier to keep than bad habits that need correcting later.
