Confidence Based Training Assessment
Instead of taking the practical test with VTNZ, you can choose to have your safe riding skills assessed by us here at 1st Gear.
Although training isn't compulsory, we highly recommend you complete some training before attempting this ride. This will ensure that you have all the necessary skills to pass, and that you are fully prepared for the assessment. You must also be a minimum age of 16 and half to attempt the Restricted assessment.
During the assessment you will need to show confidence
moving in
riding straight
riding a curves
riding through different types of intersections
overtaking
turning back
moving out.
We will be looking for good
Observation skills.
Interactions with others and your environment.

If you pass the assessment, there is no further test required at the any licencing agent

The first step in obtaining a Class 6 Learner motorcycle licence is Basic Handling Skills. Once you have a Basic Handling Skills certificate, you can then and only then apply for your learners licence. When you pass the theory test, you are rewarded with a Class 6 learner licence. You will only be allowed to ride a Learner approved motorcycle (LAMS) between the hours of 5am and 10pm. You also need to display an L plate and never carry a passenger.

The CBTA 6R for your restricted motorcycle licence is a 1-hour assessment ride. You can attempt this at any time while on your Learners Licence but you must be at least 16.5 years old. The assessment will look at your safe riding skills and if you pass you will receive a certificate that you can use to apply for your restricted motorcycle licence at any licencing agent. You are still restricted to the hours of 5am and 10pm. Must never carry passengers and can only operate a LAMS approved motorcycles.

CBTA 6F for your full motorcycle licence will take just 30min. You can attempt this after 9 months of being on your Restricted licence. This assessment will look at your safe riding skills and if you pass you will receive a certificate that you can use to apply for your full motorcycle licence.
note: you must be on your Restricted licence for a minimum of 12 months before you can apply for your Full at any licencing agency.!
