Taking the 1st step
Taking the First Step to Motorcycle Riding Success with 1st Gear Motorcycle Training
Learning to ride a motorcycle is an exciting journey that offers freedom, independence, and a whole new way to experience the road. At 1st Gear Motorcycle Training, we understand that taking the first step can feel both exciting and a little intimidating. That's why we're committed to providing professional, supportive, one-on-one coaching to help new riders develop the skills and confidence they need to ride safely.
Your First Milestone: The Basic Handling Skills Test (BHST)
Before riding on New Zealand roads, all new motorcycle riders must successfully complete the Basic Handling Skills Test (BHST). This practical assessment confirms that you can safely control a motorcycle in a controlled off-road environment before progressing to your learner licence.
At 1st Gear Motorcycle Training, we don't just prepare you to pass the test—we help you build the foundation skills that will make you a safer rider for life.
What Does the BHST Assess?
The Basic Handling Skills Test evaluates your ability to control a motorcycle at low speeds and demonstrate essential riding techniques. During the assessment, you'll be required to complete a range of exercises, including:
Moving Off and Stopping
You'll need to demonstrate smooth and controlled starts and stops while maintaining balance and good motorcycle control.
Riding in a Straight Line
This exercise assesses your balance, clutch control, throttle control, and ability to maintain a steady riding position.
Figure Eight Turns
Riders must complete figure-eight manoeuvres to demonstrate coordination, balance, vision, and low-speed motorcycle control.
Cornering
You'll be assessed on your ability to negotiate turns smoothly while maintaining appropriate speed and positioning.
Slow Riding
Slow-speed control is one of the most important motorcycle skills. This exercise tests your balance, clutch control, throttle control, and rear brake use.
Emergency Stop
You must demonstrate the ability to stop the motorcycle quickly, safely, and under control when required.
Obstacle Avoidance
This exercise assesses your ability to steer accurately and avoid hazards while maintaining control of the motorcycle.
What We Look For
The BHST isn't just about completing the exercises—it's about demonstrating safe riding habits and good control. During training and assessment, we look for:
Good balance and stability
Smooth clutch and throttle control
Effective use of both brakes
Looking where you want the motorcycle to go
Correct riding posture
Confidence and control at low speeds
Safe decision-making and hazard awareness
Ability to follow instructions accurately
Many riders discover that vision is one of the most important skills. Where you look is often where the motorcycle goes. Developing good observation habits early makes a significant difference to your riding performance.
