Riding New Zealand Roads in Winter – Stay Safe and Keep Enjoying the Ride

Winter riding in New Zealand can be one of the most rewarding times to be on two wheels. Crisp mornings, quieter roads, and stunning scenery make for memorable rides. However, winter also brings extra challenges that every rider needs to prepare for.

Slow Down and Increase Your Following Distance

Cold temperatures, rain, and damp roads reduce tyre grip. Painted road markings, manhole covers, and metal bridge decks become especially slippery when wet. Reduce your speed and leave a larger gap between you and the vehicle ahead, giving yourself more time to react.

Watch for Ice and Frost

Black ice is one of the biggest hazards during winter, particularly early in the morning and in shaded areas where the sun doesn't reach. Bridges, valleys, and rural roads are common places for ice to form. If you suspect ice, keep your motorcycle as upright as possible, avoid sudden braking or acceleration, and ride smoothly through the area.

Be Seen

Winter often means shorter days, lower light levels, fog, and rain. Wear high-visibility or brightly coloured riding gear, keep your headlight on, and make sure all your lights are clean and working correctly. Being seen is just as important as seeing the road ahead.

Wear the Right Gear

Layering your clothing helps keep you warm without restricting movement. Waterproof riding gear, quality gloves, thermal base layers, and a neck warmer can make a huge difference to your comfort and concentration. Cold riders become tired more quickly and are more likely to make mistakes.

Check Your Motorcycle

Before heading out, spend a few minutes checking your motorcycle:

  • Tyre pressures and tread depth.

  • Lights and indicators.

  • Brakes.

  • Chain condition and lubrication.

  • Battery condition, as cold weather can affect performance.

A well-maintained motorcycle is safer and more reliable in winter conditions.

Ride Smoothly

Avoid sudden steering inputs, harsh braking, or rapid acceleration. Smooth riding helps maintain traction on wet roads and reduces the chance of losing control.

Build Your Skills

The best safety feature on any motorcycle is a well-trained rider. Practising emergency braking, slow-speed control, and cornering techniques with professional coaching can build confidence and prepare you for challenging winter conditions.

At 1st Gear Motorcycle Training, we provide personalised one-on-one coaching, Basic Handling Skills Tests, and NZTA-accredited CBTA Restricted and Full Licence assessments.
